The Eastern Market Metro Park Plan Is Advancing
The ANC that covers Eastern Market is advancing a plan to overhaul the parks around the neighborhood’s Metro station.
ANC 6B is expected to approve the Eastern Market Metro Park redesign plan at a community meeting on Tuesday. The $45 million project near the intersection of 8th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue SE would add a playground at the northeast corner, create an underground entrance to a planned expansion of the Southeast Neighborhood Library and add landscaped bioswales to manage storm water runoff.
The planning and zoning committee of ANC 6B unanimously approved a motion last night (Tuesday) to ask the Department of General Services to conduct an environmental study on the plan.
“Someone has got to do an environmental assessment of the plan to move it through the city process,” Commissioner Brian Pate said.
Barracks Row Main Street initiated the planning process, with an award-winning design by Weinstein Studio/Esocoff Associates. The business group and ANC 6B held community planning sessions from January through August.
