Metropolitan Police officer on a bicycleDays after Police Chief Cathy Lanier described efforts to boost relationships between officers and H Street corridor residents, the First District announced they will hold a meet-and-greet next week.

Members of Police Service Area 104 will meet with locals from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23 at the Hayes Senior Wellness Center (500 K St. NE).

The announcement today (Tuesday) follows an emotional community meeting held Thursday night just a block east of the senior center. Locals told Lanier that young black men who grew up in the area are constantly stopped by police and questioned about crimes. Lanier said officers will reduce unnecessary stops by getting to know residents individually.

PSA 104 covers the area roughly east of 2nd Street NE, north of Maryland Avenue NE and south of Florida Avenue NE.
