Hill East Has One of the Best Cocktails in the U.S., Book Says
The Hill East bar Wisdom has some of the best gin cocktails in the country, a recently released book says.
With drinks including a rosemary gin and tonic, the 1432 Pennsylvania Ave. SE spot made a list of the top 10 bars nationwide that serve the herbal spirit. Wisdom is featured in the book “The Spirit of Gin: A Stirring Miscellany of the New Gin Revival.”
Wisdom is D.C.’s gin hub, author Matt Teacher told USA Today.
“[Owner Erik Holzherr] is very passionate, one of the most knowledgeable people when it comes to gin,” Teacher said.
The author recommends the Eminent Domaine ($11), which combines “beautifully balanced” Bluecoat gin with ginger liqueur, the herbal liqueur Luxardo Amaro, apple juice and lime. Gin drinks also on the menu include the Purple Rain ($9), which is Bluecoat gin, acai juice and aloe vera.
On his blog, Gintender.com, Holzherr asked cocktail fans to give gin a chance.
“Many people are scared of gin because they either are not huge juniper fans (a key ingredient that smells like Xmas trees) or they have had cheap stuff. Many of the new small batch gins produced today are much lighter on the juniper,” he wrote. “My mission in life is to convert vodka drinkers to gin drinkers, even though it is still an uphill battle.”
Holzherr did not immediately respond to an inquiry.
