Expanded Summer Youth Employment Program Now Open

Unemployed young adults on Capitol Hill might find work this summer through a new D.C. initiative.

As of noon today, the Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program is accepting applications from D.C. residents age 22 to 24, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced. The program previously only was open to locals age 14 to 21.

Young adults will receive “six weeks of meaningful work experience and individualized support” to help them pursue long-term careers, according to the D.C. government. Participants with children or who have had difficulties with school will have priority access to the program.

Residents can apply online, starting today. Applications will be open through April 17.

“This investment in our youth is a vital part of my vision to put more DC residents on pathways to the middle class,” Bowser said in a statement. “By providing young adults with opportunities to work, earn and learn, we are ensuring they have the resources needed to compete in the local workforce and secure viable careers with good paying wages.”
