A man suspected of burglarizing a home in Hill East this week was caught on video at the Eastern Market Metro station smoking a cigarette, a video distributed yesterday by police shows.

A thief hit the house on the 1800 block of Potomac Avenue SE between 11 p.m. Tuesday and 7:45 a.m. Wednesday, police said. The home is within a couple blocks of the D.C. General homeless shelter, D.C. jail and Congressional Cemetery.

The person of interest wanted in connection with the burglary rode down an escalator at the Eastern Market Metro station about 5 a.m. Wednesday as he smoked a cigarette, the video shows. He put the cigarette out in a canister at the bottom of the escalator before using a ticket machine and walking to a train.

The man wore a black T-shirt and jeans.
