Capitol Hill residents can trade in their old neckties for free loaves of bread this week.

The annual “Father’s Day Ugly Tie Contest” has returned to Spring Mill Bread Co. on Barracks Row. Until 5 p.m. Friday, the bakery at 701 8th St. SE will give away a free loaf of bread valued at $5.65 in exchange for “your dad’s ugliest tie,” according to a flyer posted at the shop. But Spring Mill only will accept one tie per customer.

For $5.65, locals can take home loaves that include the bakery’s honey whole wheat, country wheat and oat bran bread.

The winner of the contest will receive a Spring Mill gift box valued at $50.

Luke Britt, store manager of the Barracks Row bakery, said the contest is an opportunity to give back to neighborhood families.

“It’s a way to connect with the community,” he said.
