A festival will bring dogs, beer, food trucks and live music to an event space near Union Market next month.
Barkly, a professional dog-walking service, and The Big Bad Woof, a pet supplies company, will host the second annual Woofstock at the DC Pavilion (1399 5th St. NE) on Saturday, Aug. 6 from 3-7 p.m.
The event will have craft beer from Raven Brewery, local food trucks, giveaways and a special animal adoption event.
“People in D.C. are hungry for dog-friendly events,” Barkly co-founder Dave Comiskey said.
Around 350 people attended last year’s Woofstock event despite dismal rainy conditions, Comiskey said. This time around he’s expecting “well over 1,000 guests” to attend, weather permitting.
Locals can snag a free ticket online to attend the event.

Dap is the Hill Pet of the Week. He’s a two-year-old terrier/ pit bull mix who can be adopted. Here’s his bio shared by the Washington Humane Society Shelter on New York Avenue NE:
What’s up?! I am Dap. I know its kind of a silly name but they gave me that name because I have a very special talent – if you put your fist out I will give you a dap (or some folks call it giving pounds)! If you don’t believe me check out my profile pictures!
I’m also a big ole goofball. I love hanging out with my human friends and I love learning new tricks – especially when treats are involved. You might have noticed I have some scaring on my back. I don’t really remember what happened before I got to WHS but I know the folks here are taking good care of me and nursing me back to health.

An annual spectacle featuring local chihuahuas racing along the Southwest waterfront in celebration of Cinco de Mayo has been pushed back a week.
The “Running of the Chihuahuas” will now occur Saturday, May 7, not this Sunday as previously planned, organizers announced in an email this afternoon.
“We are reaching out to let you know that given the forecast, we are moving the 5th Annual Running of the Chihuahuas to the Saturday, May 7 rain date,” the email reads. “All other event details remain the same.”
Sunday is expected to be wet and cool, according the National Weather Service.

A vice president of the Capitol Riverfront BID and a member of a local nonprofit are asking residents who walk their dogs in Navy Yard to scoop their pets’ poop.
Emily Franc at Anacostia Riverkeeper and Dan Melman, Capitol Riverfront BID’s Vice President of Parks and Public Realm, spoke their minds in an open letter to residents in the BID’s newsletter yesterday.
“We love our pets, and recognize the challenge in an urban environment of finding places for them to stretch their legs and do their ‘business,'” reads the letter. “However, skipping scooping up after your dogs is a significant problem. This unsanitary condition is often referred to as the ‘brown plague.’ Given that one gram of pet waste can harbor 23 million fecal coliform bacteria as well as parasites and roundworms, the “brown plague” label is apt.”
Dog poop left on the ground may wash into storm drains, which in turn may harms the water quality of local waterways, they argue. “The nutrient released from this waste directly harms aquatic vegetation, and reduces oxygen levels causing further detriment to fish and aquatic vegetation,” continues the letter.
Poop has long been a contentious issue among dog-havers in Capitol Hill. Neighbors famously fought over feces in the Hill East listserv two years ago. Then, when a serial “trespooper” plagued the neighborhood last year, local leaders considered putting up signs to deter them.

Tater Tot is the Hill Pet of Week. She’s a 4-year-old Corgi who loves humans and other dogs. Here’s her bio hared by her owner, Kathy Rowings:
Tater Tot may be short in stature but what she lacks in height she makes up for in personality! She is a lover of humans, particularly those who pet her, and is learning to play with other dogs, too.
Tater’s humans adopted her in January 2015 from a nice family in Pittsburgh, and she’s been living the dream in D.C. ever since! Her favorite things are the aforementioned humans who pet her, licking everything, playing fetch, chasing squirrels and nudging the phone out of your hand if you’re not paying enough attention to her.
Her kryptonite is animals on television – she rushes to the TV and barks at full volume until they go away, and looks in confusion at her humans who don’t seem to be concerned that there are strange animals in the house!
She hopes to see you at a park on the Hill one day soon! You can follow her adventures on Instagram.

Hazel is the Hill Pet of the Week. She’s a 3-year-old pit bull who loves meeting new people. Here’s her bio shared by her owner, Annie Hammel:
Hazel is a 3-year-old pit bull who is changing the public perception of the breed with every person she meets. The loving and gentle pup greets everyone she passes with a frenetically wagging tail and a huge grin.
Hazel’s mom rescued her in spring 2015 with the help of Lost Dog & Cat Rescue Foundation in Virginia. It became clear on the first day that not only had Hazel never been in a city with big buildings, she had never seen stairs! Now, she races her mom up their three flights of stairs every day. She always wins.
Hazel’s favorite things are snuggles on the couch, dogs who want to play, her dog walker, Christel, the folks at Atlas Vet, her stuffed elephant, and anyone who pets her (She really is a lover). Her favorite place to hang out is Mr. Henry’s patio, where they spoil her with hugs, ice cubes, and bacon.

Scout is the Hill Pet of the Week! He’s a friendly lab/hound mix who was rescued earlier this year and can be adopted. Here’s his bio shared by Rural Dog Rescue at 733 8th St. SE and his current foster parents:
Scout is an approximately 2 year old lab/hound mix who came into the shelter as a stray. Scout arrived in D.C. on January 6th.
If you’re looking for a sweet, goofy buddy who is up for anything from a morning run to chilling on the couch, Scout is your boy! Scout loves to spend time with his people, and if he gets to meet other people and dogs while he’s doing it, that’s even better.
Scout gets along with everyone: cats, dogs, kids, and everyone else he meets. He’s house trained and crate trained and is learning to walk nicely on a leash (but it’s hard because there are so many exciting things to see and smell!). Scout can’t wait to find his forever family in the D.C. area!
Scout’s rescue was made possible by donations raised by Girl Scout Troop 3949 in Washington, D.C.

Barney is the Hill Pet of the Week! He’s a laid back 7 or 8-year-old Beagle mix who can be adopted. Here’s his bio shared by Rural Dog Rescue at 733 8th St. SE and his current foster parents:
Barney is a true delight! He is quite possibly one of the easiest dogs to take care of and have in our home. He is calm, loving, and friendly. We have loved fostering him – he is a great companion and loves short walks around the neighborhood and is very easy/well trained on the leash.
He is quiet (we have not heard him bark yet!) and obedient in the house and is completely house trained. He does not need to be crated as he likes to sleep in his doggie bed every night. He is a very happy dog and loves to get lots of cuddles and belly scratches. He loves attention and not just from us but loves getting pets from everyone and so far seems to be great around small kids.
Barney is a very low maintenance dog- two long walks will pretty much tire him out for the day and he is quite content cuddling on the couch with us afterwards or hanging out in the kitchen or dining room with us as we cook dinner or do work. He would do great with an owner/family who is looking for a quiet and sweet companion but may not have enough time to take extensive walks/runs and play with a higher-energy dog.

Jenny is the Hill Pet of the Week! She’s a 2 or 3-year-old Hound mix who can be adopted. Here’s her bio shared by Rural Dog Rescue at 733 8th St. SE:
Jenny is a beautiful little 2-3-year-old hound mix who came into the shelter as a stray. Jenny is on the shy side but her fosters are working with her every day to help her come out of her shell.
She has a very funny personality and when she is comfortable, will show her fun and spunky side, which is a total crack up. Jenny is extremely well behaved in the home and has very good manners. She has learned boundaries very quickly; does not beg for food and does not come into the kitchen when food is being prepared.
She responds well to her name and comes when called. She walks well on a leash, especially if on a harness. Jenny loves her crate and goes in often on her own to relax or sleep. She never cries or complains about being in the crate and runs in right away when it’s time to eat.
Jenny will need someone that can be patient with her while she learns to trust humans. She may benefit from going to a home with other dogs to help boost her confidence. She has gotten along great with the dogs in her foster home and is picking up the routine quickly by following their lead. Jenny can’t wait to find her forever family in the D.C. area!

Goldfish is the Hill Pet of the Week! Goldfish is not actually a fish–she’s a 6-year-old bulldog mix who can be adopted. Here’s her bio shared by the Washington Humane Society shelter on New York Avenue:
Hey, y’all! In my home before, I lived outside and hung out in the clay in the backyard, which is how I got an orange color and my name. But they cleaned me up and now I am back to my beautiful self.
I am a medium energy dog who loves to pretend I am a lap dog and am just so happy being pet and loved up. I am a big girl and need a refresher on some of my manners, but no worries I am eager to learn and please.
I have been great in the house and with my foster sister Foxy. I know I will do just as great with you and whomever you call family. I have a great personality and am just looking for my forever home. Just so you know my adoption is sponsored and my adoption fee is waived!

Marlo is the Hill Pet of the Week. He’s a 5-month-old Terrier/ Pit Bull mix who is learning a lot of new tricks and can be adopted. Here’s his bio shared by the Washington Humane Society shelter on New York Avenue:
Picture this: a long walk with your best friend. Snuggling on the couch. Eating peanut butter together. Now picture that best friend: sweet and active and 35 pounds of awesome.
Marlo’s the name, and I’m the one you’ve been searching for! I get overwhelmed pretty easily right now, but if you’re willing to give me a little time, I’ll be the greatest pal you could ever hope for.
I’m learning new things everyday, like how to sit and stay and all the fun things you can do with a rope toy. And you could be part of it all! You and me, together forever. Isn’t that a pretty picture? Come meet me today, and make it a reality!

Barnabean is the Hill Pet of the Week. He’s a ten-month-old terrier/pit bull mix who loves going on walks and can be adopted. Here’s his bio shared by the Washington Humane Society shelter on New York Avenue:
Hi, I’m Barnabean, or Bean for short!
My favorite thing in the world is to go on walks. They’re fun, and a great way to get to know nice people! I’m much happier on walks than in my kennel, so I get REALLY excited when people come up to the door! Don’t worry though, I calm down once you let me out.
I love to wiggle up next to you, try to curl up in your lap, and just want to be the apple of your eye. I would excel in a calm, quiet home that can help me work on relaxation and confidence building.
Stuffed Kongs and kibble puzzle toys should help with stress relief and keep my brain working. Think you could help me grow into a calm, confident gentleman?

Daisy is the Hill Pet of the Week. She’s a 6-year-old Terrier/Pit Bull mix who loves lounging around and can be adopted. Here’s her bio shared by the Washington Humane Society shelter on New York Avenue:
Miss Daisy here! True to my name, I’m looking for a place to sprawl out in the sun where I can bloom into the goofy, cuddle bug that I am.
Belly rubs and lounging with my human are some of my favorite pastimes. I’d like to share my home with humans and lots of treats please. I like to think I am the perfect age, over my pup years and not yet into my senior years.
I like hiking and long walks with my human friends followed by napping on the couch and watching movies all night. Come meet me at the New York Ave shelter today!

Fiona is the Hill Pet of the Week. She’s a 5-year-old Terrier who can be adopted. Here’s her bio shared by the Washington Humane Society shelter on New York Avenue NE:
Hi there! My name is Fiona. I am told that I have the softest fur and the sweetest brown eyes.
I was found after being abandoned and I’m a little shy and uncertain of myself at the moment, but if you show me some affection I won’t be able to help myself from giving you gentle kisses and little nuzzles. The rest of the time I’ll give you your space and find a quiet corner to curl up in until you want to pet me again. And, if you have a stuffed lamb or teddy bear for me to take with me to my corner I’ll be sure to keep them warm and safe while we sleep.
My doggie foster brother and sister say I’m there to play, but I much prefer to snuggle with them. My foster Mom wants me to mention that I’m perfectly house-trained and have even learned to use pee pads for those days she has to work late and can’t get home to let me out. My ideal home would be a calm, quiet environment with someone who would be willing to help me with my confidence.

Rocko is the Hill Pet of the Week. He’s a 1-year-old Terrier/ Pit Bull mix who can be adopted. Here’s his bio shared by the Washington Humane Society shelter on New York Avenue NE:
Rocko here! I’m a super lovable dog available for adoption at the Washington Humane Society’s New York Ave shelter.
I came to the shelter because my family could no longer care for me. Although I am still a young dog I’m medium energy and to be honest my favorite past time is hanging out with human friends. As you can tell from my photos I am really good at sitting in my friend’s laps.
I also like to go on long walks and runs and I think I would probably love going on hikes – checking out nature and seeing new sites with my humans sounds like a perfect day to me. Come meet me today and make me a part of your family!
