After a long wait, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Capitol Hill, also known as Mormons on the Hill, are looking forward to welcoming you to their new home at 522 7th Street SE.

Join the congregation on Dec. 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for some holiday cheer and a chance to see the new meeting house, conveniently located one block south of the Eastern Market Metro station. There will be tours of the building (including a scavenger hunt for children), holiday crafts, apple cider, holiday treats, and caroling.

Everyone is welcome to stop by the open house and see the results of four long years of construction. The meeting house was constructed in consultation with neighbors, The Historical Society of Washington, D.C.,and others to ensure it was consistent with the surrounding rowhomes, some of which date back to the time of Abraham Lincoln.

One of the new features of the building is a basketball court, which many members have been waiting to use with baited breath. The meeting house also includes a chapel, kitchen and classrooms, where youth group activities and Sunday school lessons are held. Mormons on the Hill anticipate using their new meeting house to serve the community.

The meeting house is special in more ways than one, as it is the first time Mormons on the Hill have had a formal chapel to meet in. Previously, the lot on which the new meeting house is located was occupied by an old Safeway building, which was used by Mormons on the Hill as a church from 1993-2011. The congregation moved into their new home two weeks ago, with a dedication ceremony on Nov. 22.

The Capitol Hill Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has more than 300 members, as diverse as the Hill community itself. The congregation looks forward to serving with Capitol Hill in their new home and will be hosting community-wide service events in the future (stay tuned). As part of the Open House, the church is hosting a food drive to support the Capital Area Food Bank, providing an opportunity for visitors to drop off dried foods and canned goods at their new meeting house.

Come check out the new meeting house and say “hello” to members of the congregation – many of whom are probably your neighbors.

Crime tape (Photo via Flickr/nullvalue)(Updated at 12:15 p.m.)Elijah Smith, the 19-year-old who pleaded guilty to punching a 69-year-old man in the Eastern Market Metro station in April, was arrested again last night for assaulting a Metro Transit Police Department officer.

Smith was arrested for punching the officer last night, according to a tweet from the Metro Transit Police.

The arrest last night occurred near the Gallery Place-Chinatown Metro station, according to the arrest report. Smith started arguing with two officers. When one officer walked away, Smith grabbed the back of the officer’s jacket and punched him about six times in the face, the report states. The officers used pepper spray to subdue Smith, who later said to the officers he “took five pills and was drinking,” according to police.

In May, Smith was arrested and charged with simple assault after punching the 69-year-old man on an escalator in the Eastern Market station on April 24. Smith pleaded guilty in September and was on release from jail while he awaited sentencing.

Eastern Market Metro stationMetro Transit police yesterday arrested a 14-year-old D.C. boy wanted for a string of robberies at Eastern Market and other Blue, Orange and Silver line stations.

Thieves have snatched several iPhones from riders between the Eastern Market Metro station and the New Carrollton and Largo Town Center Metro stations since May, police said.

The juvenile will face charges in D.C. in connection with six iPhone thefts between May 27 and June 15. The thefts include May 31 and June 9 robberies at the Eastern Market Metro station.

An investigation is ongoing to identify whether the suspect is linked to any other cases. Metro Transit police initially said they were looking for suspects in other iPhone robberies in addition to the thefts the teenager is accused of committing.

Police used surveillance video to identify the juvenile.

A video police released last month in connection with the thefts appears to show four young men running away from a train stopped at the Deanwood Metro station about 10:30 p.m. on June 1.

Metro Transit police said they’ve “significantly increased patrols” aboard trains and at stations in response to the robberies.

Metro’s Blue, Orange and Silver lines are seeing an uptick in thefts at Eastern Market and other stations, Metro Transit police said today.

Robbers have snatched several iPhones from riders between the Eastern Market Metro station and the New Carrollton and Largo Town Center Metro stations, police said. Authorities said six thefts between June 1 and Tuesday appear to be connected.

The thieves often strike when trains stop at Metro stations, police said. When train doors open, they typically grab phones from riders’ hands and run away.

All of the robberies have happened in the afternoon or evening, police said. At Eastern Market, a theft happened about 1:30 p.m. on June 9 on the station’s platform.

The attacker moved in front of the victim on the escalator and then turned to face him, a video distributed by police shows. The assailant spat in the senior citizen’s face and then punched him three times.

The victim then fell on the escalator. Bystanders stopped to help the man, as the assailant walked away, the video shows.

The victim was hospitalized with facial injuries.
