Back on October 16, I said that the weekend forecast might have meant that cold weather was here to stay. But with today being the hottest Nov. 6 ever recorded in the District, I think it’s time to abandon any long-term weather predictions and leave it up to the professionals.
The Washington Post’s Capital Weather Gang predict that a cold front tonight will bring more normal temperatures in the 50s and 60s on Saturday and Sunday, with showers possible on Saturday.
With the cold front comes a long list of events scheduled for this weekend, offering plenty of chances to enjoy the relatively normal weather while it lasts. Here’s everything you need to know to make the most of this weekend in the Capitol Hill area:
Events
Trouble Makers: The Struggle

Friday 7-10 p.m.
The H Street gallery will hold a reception tonight for the opening of their new exhibit Trouble Makers: The Struggle, featuring visual artist Lusi Peralta Del Valle and musician W. Ellington Felton.
Prudential 4.01K Race
Stadium-Armory campus
Saturday 8 a.m.-2 p.m.
The Prudential 4.01K race is set to begin at 10 a.m. from the Stadium-Armory campus. After the race there will be a post-race festival open to the public with food trucks, games and a surprise concert sponsored by Pandora.
DC Beer Festival
Nationals Park (1500 S Capitol St. SE)
Saturday 12-3 p.m. or 5-8 p.m.
Craft breweries, DJs, food trucks and lawn games will come together at Nationals Park this weekend for the DC Beer Festival. Guests can choose to attend one of two sessions. Tickets include unlimited beer tasting and access to other event activities which will set up shop throughout the ballpark. Admission is $40 per person and available online.
2015 Hilly Awards
St. Marks Episcopal Church (301 A St. SE)
Saturday 6 – 10 p.m.
The tradition of honoring Capitol Hill area business returns this weekend. The formal event will have food and live music to bring together local businesses and their loyal customers. Gala tickets for the general public are $75, but prices vary for Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce members. They can be purchased online.
Side Yards
Yards Park (355 Water St. SE)
Saturday 6-10 p.m.
A carnival complete with magicians, fire breathers and contortionists is coming to Navy Yard. A collection of East Coast sideshow performers,many from the traveling Circus of Wonders, will put their quirky talents on display for guests. A burlesque show is also planned for one of three performances stages, a new feature to this year’s event. There will be live music, food available for purchase and a beer garden by Due South, which opened near Yards Park in August.
Taste of H
Atlas Performing Arts Center (1333 H St. NE)
Sunday 6-10 p.m.
The annual Taste of H fundraiser for J.O. Wilson Elementary school will feature food and drinks from 15 area restaurants in addition to silent and live auctions.

Metrorail
Five of the six Metro lines will undergo maintenance this weekend
- Red Line trains will operate every 18 minutes
- Orange, Silver and Blue line trains will operate every 20 minutes
- Yellow Line trains will operate every 20 minutes between Huntington and Mt. Vernon Square only
Metrobus
On Saturday, buses will detour around the National Mall and L’Enfant Plaza from 6-11 a.m. for the American Heart Association Heart Walk. Affected bus lines are : 30N, 30S, 32, 34, 36, 52, 54, 74 and P6
Capitol Hill’s Chamber of Commerce, CHAMPS, will honor local businesses on Saturday night at the sixth annual Hilly Awards.
Awards will be handed out in over 22 categories at the awards gala at St. Mark’s Church (301 A St. SE). The ceremony will take place from 6 to 10 p.m. and will be hosted by Ward 6 Councilman Charles Allen.
“The idea behind the awards is to provide a place for local businesses and, of course, our wonderful community to come together and celebrate the great work happening on Capitol Hill every day,” Hannah Jacobson, a member of the CHAMPS Board of Directors, said. “In particular we want to celebrate the small business owners that make this such a vibrant neighborhood.”
In addition to serving on the board of CHAMPS, Jacobson is also the director of marketing at the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, which was nominated for best arts organization at this year’s awards.
Other award categories include best realtor, best fitness club, best non-profit and best pet services.
Food and drinks will be served at the gala and tickets can be purchased online.

This one-woman show is part of this fall’s Women’s Voices Theater Festival and tells the story of a female newspaper columnist who wrote about suburban home life from the mid-1960s to the late 1990s. The show was written by twin sisters and is in its last week of production on the Southwest Waterfront. Full-price tickets cost $55 to $90, depending on the show date and time. Celebrate National Novel Writing Month: Get Unblocked!

The DC Public Library has teamed up with author Hannah Sternberg and Capitol Hill Arts Workshop for a series of free workshops to help locals finish their still-in-progress novels. The Northeast branch will host four workshops every Tuesday in November. Each has a different theme, starting with character development. Interested writers should register online.
Wednesday
Celebrate National Novel Writing Month: Finish Your Novel Already!
Southeast Library in Eastern Market (403 7th St. SE)
Time: 6:30 – 8 p.m.
The Southeast branch is also contributing to the community celebration, holding two workshops on novel writing that start this week. The free workshops–both held on Wednesday evenings this month–are meant to help aspiring authors tackle the “very specific set of challenges and disciplines” that come with writing a novel while keeping up with daily obligations and busy schedules. Hill Center Jazz Ensemble, led by Marshall Keys

Saxophonist Marshall Keys will take the lead in this installment of the Hill Center Concert Series. Song selections are original works from jazz ensemble members and are written to show the current state of jazz in the District. Monday
U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum (100 Raoul Wallenberg Place SW)
Time: 6:30 – 10 p.m.
The museum will open a nighttime display featuring images of ethnic and religious minorities in Iraq projected onto the building’s exterior. The series will begin Monday evening with a discussion about the background of the people in the images and to provide context. Admission is free, and the display will run through Nov. 12.

Capitol Hill residents can show their support for their favorite local businesses by voting for them in this year’s Hilly Awards.
The Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce (CHAMPS) hosts the annual Hilly Awards Gala, which recognizes top businesses and nonprofit organizations on the Hill. Voting for this year’s awards began Monday.
More than 400 local businesses were nominated last year, according to CHAMPS. The group presents awards to restaurants, pet service providers, healthcare organizations, arts groups and auto mechanics, among other businesses and nonprofits.
Voting will remain open until Sept. 20. Winners will be announced at the Hilly Awards Gala at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church (301 A St. SE) on Nov. 7. Each category will have one winner and one runner-up.
Tickets to the gala are available online for $50 before Aug. 31. Admission includes food and drinks from local Hill eateries.
