After a long wait, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Capitol Hill, also known as Mormons on the Hill, are looking forward to welcoming you to their new home at 522 7th Street SE.

Join the congregation on Dec. 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for some holiday cheer and a chance to see the new meeting house, conveniently located one block south of the Eastern Market Metro station. There will be tours of the building (including a scavenger hunt for children), holiday crafts, apple cider, holiday treats, and caroling.

Everyone is welcome to stop by the open house and see the results of four long years of construction. The meeting house was constructed in consultation with neighbors, The Historical Society of Washington, D.C.,and others to ensure it was consistent with the surrounding rowhomes, some of which date back to the time of Abraham Lincoln.

One of the new features of the building is a basketball court, which many members have been waiting to use with baited breath. The meeting house also includes a chapel, kitchen and classrooms, where youth group activities and Sunday school lessons are held. Mormons on the Hill anticipate using their new meeting house to serve the community.

The meeting house is special in more ways than one, as it is the first time Mormons on the Hill have had a formal chapel to meet in. Previously, the lot on which the new meeting house is located was occupied by an old Safeway building, which was used by Mormons on the Hill as a church from 1993-2011. The congregation moved into their new home two weeks ago, with a dedication ceremony on Nov. 22.

The Capitol Hill Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has more than 300 members, as diverse as the Hill community itself. The congregation looks forward to serving with Capitol Hill in their new home and will be hosting community-wide service events in the future (stay tuned). As part of the Open House, the church is hosting a food drive to support the Capital Area Food Bank, providing an opportunity for visitors to drop off dried foods and canned goods at their new meeting house.

Come check out the new meeting house and say “hello” to members of the congregation – many of whom are probably your neighbors.

Fall leaves

The District government brought out their snow plows today for a practice run before snow season, but they won’t be needing the trucks anytime soon. Aside from possible rain on Sunday morning, this weekend is expected to be dry and sunny with temperatures in the 60s.

The ideal fall weather makes it a perfect time to check out some events across the Capitol Hill area or to start celebrating Halloween a week early. On Wednesday, we published a guide to every early Halloween and fall-themed celebration happening around the area this weekend. Here’s everything else you need to know to make the most of this weekend in the Capitol Hill area:

Events

Home Movie Day
Southwest Library (900 Wesley Place SW)
Saturday 11 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Southwest residents can bring their home movies to the Southwest library at 900 Wesley Place SW on Saturday for preservation tips and to emphasize the importance of home footage in underrepresented communities.

Hot Cider Hustle 5K/15K
RFK Stadium (2400 East Capitol St. SE)
Saturday 9 a.m.

Capitol Hill-area runners can participated in one of two fall-themed races around RFK Stadium along the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail. Both races start at 9 a.m. in Lot 7. Hot apple cider and caramel apples will wait for participants as they cross the finish line. Registration is still open for both races, but the price will increase tonight at 9 p.m.

Haunted Harvest
Capitol Hill Montessori at Logan (215 G St. NE)
Saturday 6-9 p.m.

This fall festival is for families to celebrate Halloween a little early. The event will have several activities, including a haunted house, spooky pumpkin painting, mad science experiments and a zombie dance party. Costumes are encouraged for all attendees. A chili cook-off contest will take place from 6 – 7:30 p.m. for $1 per taste. Dinners of chili or hotdogs will be served from 6 – 8 p.m. and cost $5 each. A $20 donation per family is recommended.

More Events

For more Halloween and fall events over the weekend, check out How to Start Celebrating Halloween a Week Early

There are several events scheduled to address recent crime on and around Capitol Hill. More on those events is available here.

If you’re looking for a new home in the Capitol Hill area or just want to see what your neighbors’ houses look like, check out some of these open houses in the area this weekend.

  • Between 10 p.m. tonight and the end of service on Saturday, there is scheduled track maintenance on five of the six metro lines:
    • Red Line trains will operate every 18 minutes
    • Yellow Line trains will only operate between Huntington and Mt. Vernon Square. Trains will keep regular weekend schedules
    • Green Line trains will operate every 16 minutes
    • Orange, Silver, and Blue Line trains will operate every 26 minutes
